Best restaurants in Dermot building neighborhoods

Living in a Dermot property means more than having a comfortable home; it means having access to a diverse culinary landscape at your fingertips. Let’s take a journey through a few of Dermot’s neighborhoods, highlighting some of our favorite spots for foodies:

Upper East (The Colorado and 220 East 72nd):

Levain Bakery: Known for its legendary 6-ounce chocolate chip cookies, Levain is a must-visit for dessert enthusiasts. From fresh pastries to delectable baked goods, it’s hard to walk past Levain without the sweet aroma pulling you inside.

Lexington Candy Shop: Step back in time at this classic neighborhood favorite diner, which has been home to the Upper East Side for decades. For a classic diner experience, sip on an old-fashioned milkshake and dig into a double-decker sandwich.

Upper West (21 west end):

Mama’sToo: Every pizzalover knows Mama’s Too, a hot spot crafting some of the best slices in thecity. With unique toppings and a crispy yet chewy crust, this tiny shop iswhere pizza aficionados rejoice.

Bành: A culinary haven that features Vietnamese flavors with a modern twist, Bành offers a vibrant menu, fresh ingredients, and expertly crafted dishes. From pho bowls to banh mi sandwiches, diners are transported to the streets of Hanoi (with a New York flare).

Lower East Side (250 East Houston):

Katz Deli: A New York City icon, Katz Deli is synonymous with the best pastrami sandwiches in town. Boasting a rich history and a menu that pays homage to traditional Jewish deli fare, Katz Deli is a cultural and culinary landmark.

Le French Diner: A small bistro that only seats about 20, Le French Diner holds an intimate and charming ambiance reminiscent of a cozy Parisian bistro. Indulge in a savory croque monsieur sandwich or some escargot to take a culinary journey through the flavors of France.

Prospect Park, Brooklyn (The Kestrel):

Silver Rice: Home to the rice cup, Silver Rice is perfect for satisfying your sushi fix on the go. High-quality, affordable, and stylish, Silver Rice specializes in innovative sushi and poke bowls- thank us later!

Morgan’s BBQ: Experience some of Brooklyn’s greatest barbeque at this exceptional spot. Sit outside and enjoy the warm weather while cutting into a smokey brisket or pulled pork sandwich. Don’t miss their happy hour, Monday through Friday, from 5 to 6:30.

Happy eating!

“Dos and Don’ts” for a happy resident/property manager relationship

A positive resident/property manager relationship is the cornerstone of a thriving community. Whether you’re a first-time renter or property manager dedicated to providing exceptional service, understanding the basic dos and don’ts is essential for a happy and harmonious relationship.

DO pay your rent on time:
Arguably, the most important rule of them all– timely rent payments. Ensuring prompt rentpayments demonstrates responsibility and fosters a positive financialrelationship with the property manager (and saves you from late fees!).

DON’T make major renovations or do so with fair warning about the cost:
It’s normal for tenants to add their own personal flare to their units, but make sure to check your lease/what’s permitted with your property manager before doing so. For example, if you paint your apartment, does your landlord require you to paint it back to the original color upon vacating, or otherwise risk losing part of your deposit? Similarly, if you put up wallpaper, will they charge a hefty removal fee?

DO put rugs on your floor:
There is the 60% rule for a reason: noises like kids running or highheels from the above apartment can disturb the people in the below unit, keepthem up at night, and otherwise drive them insane. The majority of your unit’s floors should becovered unless you are on the 2nd floor! If you ignore this rule, chances are the next time you move, you’ll be on the flip side of the equation.

DON’T ignore guidelines:
Disregarding property guidelines and community rules is strenuous for neighbors and property managers alike (see above). Following these rules prevents any unnecessary stress or conflict for everyone involved.

DO establish good relationships with yourneighbors:
Fostering positive and respectful relationships with neighbors enhances the overall quality of life within the building. Studies show loneliness is the biggest risk factor for disease, more dangerous than heart disease and cancer. You are living in an apartment building, surrounded by people—most of whom are nice and interesting—so be friendly, introduce yourself to your neighbors, and live a long life!

Sustainability - how to save energy in your apartment

Dermot's longstanding interest and commitment to sustainability and responsibility stems from our core belief that sustainable practices are synonymous with good business practices. We invest heavily in reducing our portfolio’s emission load; specifically, we are on track to reduce it by an ambitious 40% over the next five years, and we encourage – even reward – our residents for contributing to these efforts at home. Here are several simple eco-friendly practices you too can implement from the comfort of your own apartment!

LED Bulbs
Switch out your traditional bulbs for LEDs. LEDs are 85% more efficient and last up to 25 times longer than traditional iridescent. Your electricity bill and the environment will thank you!

Energy-Efficient Window Coverings
Using blinds and curtains with insulation can help you decrease your thermostat use and naturally regulate the temperature in your apartment. Keep your blinds open to warm your space, and close them to block out the sun.

Embrace Natural Light
Although it sounds like a no-brainer, we often forget to turn off our lights when leaving the apartment. Make sure your lights are turned off when they’re not needed. Keep blinds open in the apartment to reduce the need for artificial lighting.

Recycle Responsibly
Make a designated recycling bin! Recycling helps conserve natural resources such as paper, cans, plastic, and metal. It will also indirectly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Alternatively, Simple Human has a fabulous recycling solution—a dual-compartment option that makes sorting trash look good! There is even a composting caddy add-on feature and a voice and motion control option!

Implementing these quick energy-saving practices into everyday apartment living can bring significant results and a greener world.

How to make moving easier

As exciting as moving can be, packing up your life can be chaotic and overwhelming, to say the least. However, with some planning and some tips and tricks, moving can be less stressful. Here’s a guide that can help you turn your move into a smoother transition while saving money:

Create a Timeline:
Create lists and make a timeline for yourself. Although it sounds simple, breaking down the process into manageable steps can make moving less daunting. Steps like sorting your belongings, getting rid of unwanted items, hiring moving services, scheduling utilities, and updating your address can make moving less of a pain. The earlier you start, the better.

Declutter and Organize:
Before diving into the daunting task of packing up your belongings, kickstart your move by decluttering. Weed out any unnecessary or unwanted items, sorting them into piles for selling, donating (and remember, with ample notice, the Red Cross can conveniently pick up your donations!), or disposing of them. By lightening your load, you'll streamline the packing and unpacking process.
Once your belongings are boxed up, ensure a seamless transition by labeling each box with its designated room. The key to a smooth move is to stay organized!

Pack Essentials Separately:
Before everything gets packed up, set aside the essentials and belongings you know you’ll reach for within the next few days and pack them into an overnight bag. Things like important documents, a change of clothes, a toothbrush, and chargers will make life a lot easier. No need to sift through every box to find the necessities!

Get A Few Quotes from Movers:
Interview more than one mover and have them come personally to see your space before providing an estimate.  Moving can get very expensive very quickly, so you’ll want to ask questions like: “How much can I save if I provide all the boxes and/or if I do all the packing?” - often, it’s substantial. Similarly, the mover you choose should know where you are moving to - details like where they can legally park their truck, how large the freight elevator is, and how far away the apartment is from the elevator- all may impact their final estimate.

Not everything needs to be purchased:
Sure, you’ll want boxes, packing tape, garbage bags, and bubble wrap. Proper packing and materials will protect your belongings throughout the move. The last thing anyone wants is to show up to a new place with broken plates! But many of these items you can find for free, whether it's going to a local store that would be happy to give you the boxes they’ve unpacked that day (think Pottery Barn or a local grocery store) or asking a porter in your current building to set aside a big stack of newspapers for you - typically Sundays are great days for this (newspapers in lieu of bubble work works great for dishes and other fragile items).

We all know that moving can put your life on hold and be expensive and stressful, but it’s essential to maintain a positive attitude and be flexible. Embrace the change and get excited for a new adventure!
